This weekend I went on my hunt for my unique object to abstract for my last assignment. I’ve been really into the whole Christmas thing this year, wanting to decorate and have xmas be all over my house. I went into this thrift store next to my apartment and found a huge box of pinecones for sale. These were on my list of things to buy for the house so I got a few of them and shot them. Did some motion type of stuff, a little bit of out of focus shooting and came out with exactly what I was hoping for.

I felt very uninspired for some reason. I had a few ideas floating around but I just couldn’t land on something. Last class I felt sick and left early, and felt bad for it. I wanted to make sure I was going to get a good image for class but was unsure where to begin. I thought to do something with loose tea but tea is so dar and I wanted a really light image.

Thanksgiving I went home and all I could think about was I need to shoot this assignment while I am home. My mom’s house has AMAZING light so I knew I was going to shoot there but still had no idea what to shoot. So thanksgiving night after we all eat my mom realizes that our sink is clogged or broken so 3 bottles of draino and a lot of water later, still nothing happened. My wella pat, (my grandma) lives close to my mom so we took all of the dishes from our huge feast to her house. This was the beginning of my PATH. So we get there and my wella’s house is like a gold mine. She has so much stuff because she ‘collects’ things. She had a little collection of tea cups. All with gold on them, and pretty floral designs. I asked if I could borrow them and the next day I shot them. I envisioned something very specific when I saw the cups and after shooting I knew I had got exactly what I wanted.

I shot my ‘house’ or home. Whatever you want to call it. The first set of images are not what I am turning in. It was my initial idea to shoot structural elements of where it is that I live right now. But instead I wanted to use a shot that means more to me. I have a wall full of images that inspire me. I see it every single day when I walk up the stairs to my room and after I put up this wall of images was when my house felt more like a home. I want to expand this project into a full blown idea seen through out the next place I live.
Which be LA. This time next year.

Today I made time to do my ‘path’ assignment. I had planned all week for this morning to be my shooting day for this project. I woke up at 8 something AM, took my boyfriend to work and got ready with camera in hand and drove to an area near me that I am for the most part unfamiliar with. Since it was Saturday there were lots of yard sales and I got really excited seeing the signs so I stopped at a couple. For the most part these so called yard sales were nothing more than disappointments. I’m not sure if the people around here really understand what yard sales are. Back where I’m from, the yard sales are like gold mines. Here, they are merely 2 or three tables with a few random odds and ends. I truly do not understand. It made me really miss home. Even though I hate Marysville, it will always have a small weird place in my heart.

So after being let down by these yard sales I stopped at this cafe that was kind of hidden. I was by myself, and typically, I hate eating alone. I always feel a little awkward but today it was actually quite nice. I had a lovely cup of hot chocolate and an ‘eggle bagel’. Whole wheat bagel with egg, jack and cheddar cheese, and bacon. And tabasco. It was delicious. And only $6.04. Made waking up early worth while.

I had a really unique shoot the other day that made me think of this class. I posted the final picture because I was so happy with it.

So Monday we were talking about paths you take and how it affects your life. Well the day of this shoot I had no idea what I was going to shoot really. I had the idea to use this red tool I had bought months ago, but I had no model and wasn’t really sure how it would work. Well the morning of the shoot (it was for advance location lighting) I was supposed to be on sutter st at 8:30 am, to catch the bus to go to the location. Well I woke up at 8:20 and I live in Walnut Creek, which is roughly 35-40 min bart ride. I was freaking out, about to cry because I got so stressed about being late. I finally got in to the city and got to the location and we (my group and I) were missing some equipment and our professors were giving us a hard time but it was pretty clear to them that none of us were really wanting to hear it. I found a girl who was modeling for one of my group mates and I got all my lights set up and shot every thing within 30 mins. It is one of my favorite shots from the semester.

It reminded me of this class because I feel like my success had so much to do with my path. My path of my mind deciding to not to hear my alarm, my path of being late. And ironically it lead to something so great. I don’t plan on taking this path again but I think it was meant to be.

The day I met Anthony.

When I heard the assignment was LOVE I cringed a little because it is far too easy to be cliche with it. The pictures above are of myself and my love. My boyfriend of over 3 and a half years. We met when we were in high school. I was a senior and he was a junior. We met at a show and ever since that day we have been together. We hardly knew one another and started dating only two days after we met. He is most definitely an inspiration in my life and I love him, and am in love with him.

I was walking down Market after I dropped off some clothes I rented from ACT and usually when I walk in this area I walk as fast as I can because I hate being in the tenderloin. Today was different. There was some art festival thing going on and the streets seemed relatively quiet. I was looking at the people a lot and it really got me thinking. There are so many people not just in this area but everywhere that are struggling so much. You can see the addiction written all over these sad humans faces. I guess for a moment it really just made me humble for a moment and grateful for what I have. It inspired me to push my creativity, and myself to really produce quality this last year I am in college, and obviously for the rest of my life. I want a lot out of life, and seeing some of these people who gave into something they think they wanted out of life then just makes me want so much more.

So from the moment I got this project I was thinking and thinking. I wanted to do something wispy in feeling, and I wanted this to be not so expected. I couldn’t get the idea of a fish out of my head. So I went and bought Charles. He was 31 cents at petco, and I refused to name him, but the employees told me that was his name. He was a hard model to work with. He didn’t really take direction well. I was nervous to use him for a few reasons and I think one was quite valid. Usually, especially for this class, I use natural sunlight and manipulate that. For this I wanted the vase in which Charles was in to be illuminated. I used a profoto 600b pack with the lowest setting inside of a 5 gallon white bucket from home depot. I tried to keep the shooting minimal because I didn’t want the flash to affect Charles. I went to work and when I got home that night my boyfriend said Charles had died… I felt and still do feel really bad. I know he wasn’t expensive or any type of rare fish but he was instantly mine as soon as I saw him in the tank at petco. This week was bitter sweet because I love my image, but I am sad I had to flush poor Charles down the toilet.

I just shot my assignment and I told myself before hand, I am going to do my best to shoot outside of the box, with my focus of fashion in mind.

Last semester I tried a lot of new things and learned so much, but I didn’t really go much in the direction of fashion. I want to shoot fashion but in MY way, and with my unique eye. I love natural light and so many photographers feel they MUST use strobe. I love the fashion stuff I shoot without strobes, with simple reflectors and the beauty of sunlight.

I am very happy with my first assignment for this class. Mission accomplished.

When I first saw the package of chop sticks I knew I wanted to go with two main colors and after browsing the web a little a saw these gorgeous images showing the perfect color palette. I haven’t shot yet, but these colors are what I want present.
